Geelani under pressure to resign | 'Has turned old, accepted defeat' | | ET Report Srinagar, Dec 3: A few days after the Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani declared himself as the lifetime chairman of his faction of Hurriyat , Geelani reportedly is under tremendous pressure to call it a day and let others take over from him. Sources told Early Times separatists within and outside the Geelani's faction have been demanding the retirement of this Huriyat hawk, while pitching for some other person to take control of the conglomerate. "Geelani blaming people for failure of separatists has opened a Pandora's box as many people in his conglomerate are of the opinion that he should not have targeted the people," said a source. This 86- year- old separatist- known for his pro-Pakistan rant surprised many in the Valley when he declared, "…it is not due to disunity among Hurriyat but due to weakness of Kashmiris that we are unable to take the Kashmir issue to its logical conclusion. When we ask people to boycott polls, people do not follow our programme and came out to vote. Kashmiris are weak and do not follow programmes given by the Hurriyat in letter and spirit," Geelani had said. The statement which is being termed by the various separatists as politically incorrect has also given rise to the speculations that Geelani should be declared a "deadwood"- as proposed by some separatists in the past years. Furthermore, the statement has put the other dozen odd separatist groups in a tight-spot and would also annoy their Pakistani bosses before whom they claim of enjoying full support of the people of Kashmir. Geelani by this statement has sent a strong message across that the separatists no longer enjoy any ground support in Kashmir and that the politics which they have been playing with the masses has failed to yield any results. By declaring that he had asked people to stay away from polls but they defied the boycott call, Geelani has vindicated the claims of many that this separatist leader has lost control and enjoys meagre support on ground. What would prove worrisome for other separatist leaders in Kashmir is the choking of support from Pakistan which they have been enjoying since decades to keep the pot boiling. "Now, when the senior most separatist leader has admitted his defeat, how could you expect Pakistan to take Huriyat on board. They will be sidelined in the times to come," said a political expert. Sources meanwhile informed that the statement made by Geelani is seen even within his faction as uncalled for and politically childish statement. There are voices which are being heard from all across within the faction of the Huriyat which he is heading that Geelani must be allowed to rest and should be compelled to retire from active politics. It remains to be seen that how such a vital measure would be taken and would Geelani this time bid adieu to the party which he had made a decade earlier. |
