Private B.Ed College owned by PDP legislator takes students for a ride | In sub-zero temperatures students denied heating, other facilities | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 6: Some of the private colleges functioning in Kashmir valley and offering the Bachelor of Education (B Ed) course continue to flout the norms. The worst part is the concerned authorities at University of Kashmir have so far failed to take action against such colleges. In a latest example, the SEM College of Education located in the Humhama area in Central Kashmir's Budgam district is putting the lives of students at risk since they have been devoid of the basic facilities at the hostel provided by the college. Despite all these hardships the higher ups of college continue to remain unmoved much to the surprise of the students. Interestingly, the SEM College of Education has a political connection since it is being owned by Saif-ud-din Bhat, Member of Legislative Council (MLC). Bhat is a leader of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and got elected to upper house of the legislature only this year. Early Times has learnt from sources that students coming from different states of the country are up against many odds over the past one week or so as the requisite facilities are missing at the hostel of the SEM College. The students are freezing in the sub-zero temperature that is being recorded during night in Kashmir these days. "The students who have completed their classes and are waiting for the holding of examination are in trouble these days. Basic facilities like drinking water, power supply and heating facilities are being denied to them. The college authorities despite knowing about the problems being faced by students are not doing anything to set the matters right," said sources. Sources said that the students returned to Kashmir after hearing that their examination is going to start soon. However, the examination could not be conducted since some of the students went to the court. The students went to the court demanding that examination for the regular B Ed course should be held separately from the B Ed course offered through the Distance mode. "The college authorities have virtually ditched the students by demanding fee and other miscellaneous charges for the facilities that are lacking on the ground at present. Some of the students have fallen sick due to the want of proper heating facilities. The sick students were shifted to hospital by their fellow friends since the college authorities are missing," said sources. Sources said that some of the female students who are being accompanied by their children are the worst hit. The kids are falling prey to the cold and as such the problems are getting compounded by every passing day for the students. Still then no action whatsoever has been taken by college authorities in order to inculcate confidence among the students. "Ironically the University of Kashmir authorities continue to keep their eyes and ears shut when it comes to the problems being faced by students of private B Ed colleges functioning in the Kashmir valley. Same is the case with SEM College of Education and one wonders who would set the matters right," said sources. |
