CM's vigilance probe on cards for ‘overnight' rich Babus, Santris | | | Syed Junaid Hashmi
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 6: Speculations are rife about Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed ordering an in-depth vigilance probe into the palatial properties reportedly owned by various IAS, IPS and IFS officers across the state and outside especially in New Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon. Though all are tight-lipped over this development in the Chief Minister's Secretariat but official sources who requested not to be named told Early Times that since several reports have emerged in newspapers wherein it is being repeatedly reported that several IAS, IPS, KPS, KAS and IFS officers have purchased properties worth crores of rupees in Jammu and Kashmir as well as outside the state either on their own name or on the name of their close relatives and in some cases, even on the name of their close friends and aides. They said that even complaints have been received against some of the officers having purchased properties worth crores of rupees for peanuts. Sources further said that some of the officers, mostly from the police have filed property statements wherein they have given details of properties owned by them but reflected the cost of these properties far lesser than prevailing market rate. This too needs a serious probe since they have even got these properties registered for peanuts, which is far more serious and needs a thorough investigation, said the sources. Referring to a police officer, they said that he has purchased more than 50 Kanals of land during the last two years. He has not reflected this in his property statement and when he was asked, he said that it belongs to his parents and he has nothing to do with it; sources said. They maintained that another police officer has purchased property worth crores but has reflected it as having been gifted to him by his in-laws. An IAS officer has reflected property worth crores of rupees in his statement but repeatedly stated that it has been gifted to him by his family. 14 to 17 KAS and KPS officers have purchased flats in various parts of the state but to ensure that it remains a top secret atleast for the present time, rented them out, said an official source. He said that there was also a report about a revenue officer having purchased several hundred kanals of land at a prime location in Jammu city. A CM's aide expressed dismay over State Vigilance Commission (SVC) taking the newspaper reports non-seriously and refusing to initiate an in-depth probe into the reports of officers purchasing property worth crores when their means of income are limited and they also do not have a strong financial background. He added that the commission should have by now come-up with something concrete with regard to these reports but it is sitting silently. "You cannot go on doubting credibility of everything appearing in the media. You have to react. If this all is non-sense, it has to be said officially since these reports bring a bad name to the state. However, if there is any truth in these reports, you have to find those officers, seek answers from them and clear the system of all the corrupt elements," said an official, privy to this development. He said that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed is serious about addressing the issue of corruption in the higher echelons of power, which often goes unnoticed. He said that there are reports of some officers having built palatial bungalows, purchased flats and other properties in Chandigarh, New Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon. "You cannot allow people to go on looting the state exchequer without being held accountable for their acts of omission and commission. You have to take action and start bringing people to book. If they explain their means, they would be saved. But if they fail, they would be taken to task," said the official. |
