| Operation against militants in north Kashmir woods continues | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 6: Undeterred by chilly weather conditions and difficult terrain, security forces continued their operation against the militants hiding in the forest area in the frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir.
"Though the operation in Baban Rajwar forest is almost over with the killing of two militants on December 4, searches against militants in Manigah forest in Kupwara woods were going on," Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel N N Joshi told today.
He said continuing its relentless operations against the militants, the Army and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police in an operation in Boban Watsar forest, Handwara killed two militants on December 4.
However, a Naik Satish Kumar also lost his life while another soldier was injured, he said. Col Joshi said besides other war like stores, two AK rifles, one UBGL and five wireless sets have been recovered in the operation. He said this particular operation is almost over but search operation in the woods was a continuous process.
He said operation in the woods in Manigah forest, also in Kupwara, was going on. Because of difficult terrain and also to avoid any damage to civilians, the operation was taking longer time, he said, adding the entire forest area has been sealed to foil any militant attempt to escape. Official sources said in the last week of last month, a group of five to six militants sneaked into this side from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), where a large number of militants are waiting at launch pads.
They said one of the militant died due to cold and his body was recovered by the security forces in the first week November. Later, on November 23, another militant was also shot dead by the troops. A Colonel also lost his life on November 17 and another Lt Col and five security personnel, including a jawan of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police were also injured in the encounter during the operation. |
