Slight respite from cold in Kashmir as night temperature rises

SRINAGAR, Dec 6: Residents of Kashmir experienced slight respite from harsh winter conditions as minimum night temperature stayed above freezing point in most places of the Valley for the first time in more than a week, even as the MeT office predicted wet weather for a few days from December 9.
Except the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, the Valley witnessed improvement in weather as temperature during the night stayed above freezing point for the first time since November 28, a MeT office spokesperson said.
Gulmarg registered a temperature of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius as against the minimum of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius yesterday, he said.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, went up from minus 0.4 degrees Celsius the previous night to settle at 0.9 degrees Celsius.
Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley recorded a low of 0.2 degrees Celsius, up from minus 0.4 degrees Celsius yesterday, the spokesperson said.
Pahalgam, which serves as a base camp during the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a low of 0.7 degrees Celsius today, up from minus 0.4 degrees Celsius the previous night, the spokesperson said.
While in Kupwara region of north Kashmir mercury settled at 0.4 degrees Celsius during the night compared to yesterday's minus 0.8 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature at Kokernag in south Kashmir, settled at 1.6 degrees Celsius as against the low of 0.9 degrees Celsius, he said. The minimum temperature in Kargil town, in the frontier region of Ladakh, settled at minus 3.8 degrees Celsius, a marginal increase from the previous night's minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, the MeT spokesperson said.
Leh was the coldest recorded place in the state with the mercury settling at freezing minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, against the previous night's minus 2.9 degrees Celsius, he said. "There is possibility of rainfall at isolated places over three days from December 9," the official said.
