'Militants planning major strike in Srinagar' | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Dec 9: A day after killing of two militants near Pampore on Srinagar-Jammu highway, security forces on Wednesday beefed up the security around Srinagar city amidst inputs that militants are planning to carry out a major strike in the summer capital. Sources told Early Times that had police not intercepted the vehicle ferrying the militants near Joinery Mill Pampore on Tuesday evening there was every possibility of these militants sneaking into the city and carrying out a major attack. "Militants have been asked by their handlers to strike in a big way in Srinagar as India-Pakistan talks are underway," sources added. Police have set up nakas on the entry and exit points leading towards Srinagar and all the vehicles entering Srinagar are being frisked. "Police and other security agencies always remain on toes as we cannot be complacent. Since yesterday security has been beefed up as there is every possibility of militants may try to enter the city as one of their attempts has been foiled," said a police officer. Sources revealed that militant handlers have asked them to increase their activities to ensure that prevailing peace in Srinagar and other areas is shattered and they are able to make their presence felt. "Due to troops being alert on the border and winter setting in Pakistan is unable to push militants into this side. Militant handlers are relying on local recruits and a few locals who have taken refuge in far flung areas," they added. A source said, "It has been noticed that whenever militants want to strike in Srinagar they come from a far-flung area and after carrying out the attack they return. During the past few years all their attempts to strike in Srinagar have been foiled as the improved intelligence network of police and other agencies has prevented them from targeting the city." A police official while talking to Early Times said, "There is no doubt about that Srinagar has been turned into militant free zone but militancy is far from over. Still there are hundreds of people who work as conduits for the militants and arrange food and shelter for them in villages and the far-flung places." He said, "Police and other security agencies anticipating the moves of militants well in advance have frustrated them. They (militants) have also realized that if they plan any misadventure in the city they would get killed and it's not easy to enter or return from the city." Militants, according to the sources, have conveyed it to their handlers that carrying out attacks is not an easy job and they should not be forced to "commit suicide." "A few militant handlers are desperate and want their men to act that's why we have intensified the vigil and the security. We are under strict instructions to keep militants out of Srinagar city," said a police official. |
