India toughens stand on bilateral talks | | | India seems to have toughened its stand vis-à-vis Pakistan as far the ensuing bilateral dialogue process was concerned. Possibly after finding that Washington too has urged Islamabad to act against perpetrators of Pathankot airbase attack New Delhi's two senior functionaries have said that unless Pakistan initiated action against those involved in the terror strike on Pathankot airbase the proposed talks were under a cloud. If the Defence Minister, Manohar Parrikar's latest statement is any indication New Delhi is so much annoyed and upset over the Pathankot incident that it does not oppose taking any firm action against an individual or an organization which has engineered Pathankot type incident. In fact Parrikar would wish to punish anyone who tries to inflict pain on India, its people and its security personnel. Though he has not referred to the Pathankot incident but the Defence Minister's warning to any individual or organization was the result of the terror strike by Pakistan trained terrorists on the pathankot airbase. Yes, New Delhi is not in favour of cancelling the proposed foreign secretary level talks but it is not ready to hold these talks on January 15. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on has asserted that any individual or organisation causing pain to India should be paid back in the same coin but how, when and where "should be left to the Indian forces to decide. These, remarks have come in the backdrop of the Pathankot terror attack. Addressing the top brass of the Army, including its Chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag, the Minister said that history tells that until those who inflict damage on others experience the same pain, they don't change. Parrikar believes, it should not be taken as a government thinking, but his personal opinion that if anyone harms others the person or the organization that inflicts pain will suffer. Well Parrikar made it clear that until the pain giver is given pain pathankot type incidents will happen. It is not clear whether Parrikar believed in poetic justice or had any plan on targeting some vital bases in Pakistan in retaliation to Pathankot type incident. However, one does not attach much importance to the Defence Minister's sermons because India could not initiate any action on those who had engineered Mumbai mayhem in 2008 except that several militants were killed in encounters with the Indian security forces and the one caught alive Ajmal Kasab had to face the gallows. Yet another indication about the proposed talks remaining under a cloud was given by the National Security Adviser, Ajit Doval, despite the fact that Pakistan's Foreign Affairs Adviser, Sartaj Aziz, had stated that talks between the foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan would be held on January 15. Ajit Doval made it clear that talks have not been cancelled but India wants firm action against those who had engineered the Pathankot airbase attack before setting the stage for the dialogue. Ajit Doval has said that there will be no talks between the Foreign Secretaries of India and Pakistan on January 15, and that India "will talk only if Pakistan takes action" on the perpetrators of Pathankot airbase attack. The NSA has reportedly clarified that no date had been confirmed for the talks, so they were not being cancelled, but added talks will happen only if Pakistan takes action. Though the PMO is in favour of keeping the channels of dialogue open it depends on Nawaz Sharif as to how far he succeeds in motivating the Army functionaries and those from the ISI to hold a probe so that those who had engineered the the terror strike on Pathankot airbase. Let Nawaz Sharif accept the authenticity of the proof submitted by India on the involvement of Jash-e-Mohammad in the terror strike. Let Nawaz Sharif initiate action against Masood Azhar who heads the JeM which alone could encourage India to go in for sustained dialogue. |
