Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 12: The recent decision of Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi to put into effect 25 percent reservation quota for poor students in private schools has started to garner wide spread support in its favour as cross sections of the society in the state have come out strongly to implement the same in J&K.
Various Parents, Associations, social activist groups and students have urged upon the authorities to issue similar circular in J&K state so that a proportion of the poor and under privileged students could be able to seek admission in private schools free of cost. The 25 percent reservation quota for economically weaker sections would give them an opportunity to attain quality education for their children at par with the privileged ones whose parents could easily afford costly education. The Parents, Associations of various private schools often alleged that private schools are fleecing them by charging exorbitant fee from their wards vis-a-vis enforcing hidden obligations through which they mint more money. With such a sensitive issue pertaining to the education sector which is embroiled with lot of controversies of late particularly the private schools which have "arbitrary and discriminatory" criteria for admissions, the Early Times under its social responsibility has decided to start a series highlighting the issue of reservation for those economically backward students who seek admissions in private schools free of cost. Speaking exclusively to this scribe, the former Minister and Chairman Jammu Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) Harsh Dev Singh hailed the decision of Delhi government to grant 25 percent reservation in free admissions in private schools to the students belonging to poor families. "It is really good and appreciable that the Delhi government has implemented the provision of granting 25 percent reservation in free of cost admissions in private schools to the underprivileged students of the society…Such a decision should also be introduced in our state as the marginalized sections of the society who remain deprived of quality education facilities because of their economic conditions would get a chance to avail them," said Harsh Dev. "It would be good for the economically backward sections to bring them under the ambit of quality education," said Harsh Dev.
The Congress also backed the demand of granting reservation in admissions in private schools to the students hailing from economically weaker sections in J&K on the pattern of Delhi.
Speaking to Early Times, the former MLC and Congress Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Sharma said that any step taken for the betterment of the society is always welcomed by the party.
"No doubt several private schools running in different parts of the state have implemented arbitrary criteria in admission norms…The state government must take steps in this direction...The state government should also constitute a committee to look into the entire gambit of admission process being adopted by the private schools," he added.
