Electromagnetic bulk flow metres to be installed on tubewells, pumping stations, WTPs | | | Akshay Azad
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 12: In disguise of water losses assessment survey, the process of giving potable water supply of Jammu city into private players' hands is going on and in this direction bulk flow meters are being installed on tube wells, water pumping station, Water Treatment plants and other sources of potable water supply. Sources informed Early Times that Jammu and Kashmir Public Health Engineering department has so far not conducted any survey to find out exact details of the volume of potable water, lost in supply lines due to leakage. "The requirement of potable water in Jammu city is nearly 45 Million Gallons of water per day (MGD) and the installed capacity of water filtration plants, tubewells and other resources is nearly 35 MGD, creating a shortfall of nealy 10 million gallons of water per day", an official of PHE department informed, adding that but how much exact volume of water get wasted in the supply chain, it was still unknown as there were no metres installed. The official further said that to get the exact details of water losses was very crucial for the department for any future planning and the demand, for which the Economic Reconstruction Agency has started a project to install metres on all the water sources. "Under Jammu and Kashmir Urban Sector Investment Programme, Project-3, ERA has decided to install electromagnetic bulk flow metres on the tube-wells, Water Treatment plants, pumping stations mains emanating from pump houses, level sensors on reservoirs,, pressure transmitters on tubewells and pumping mains of pump houses, PLCs, SCADA system and modem to transfer data to control rooms and automation of tubewells", sources said, adding that after the completion of project, the exact details of water losses would be assessed. Raising finger over the installation of metres on tube-wells, an official said that the installation of metres on the pumping stations was actually in the direction of privatizing the potable water supply in Jammu city. "Metering of water connections, metering of pumping stations and tubwells will be completed by ERA and other government agencies and when all the infrastructure will be in place, the government steadily give the potable water supply to private hands", the official said, adding that the privatization of potable water in metro cities was also done on the same pattern. He further said that the privatization of power supply was also on the same lines. "No doubt the assessment of water losses survey and efforts to check power pilferage is a welcoming step but the government itself can conduct such surveys but it is just a tip of an iceberg in the privatization process. |
