Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, a legend of politics
Sunaina Malik1/16/2016 11:43:00 PM
Legends like Mufti Mohammad Sayeed are born once in centuries. He was born as a blessed child on December 1, 1936 in Baba Mohalla, Bijbehara, Kashmir. Who knew that one day this small child would wear the crown of Chief Minister of J&K and First Muslim Home Minister of India and would leave imperishable imprints on the world of Indian politics? After the completion of his L.L.B and Masters in Arab History, he started his carrier as an active lawyer but God had kept something else for him. Soon he switched to the political world. He won his first election from his home constituency Bijbehara in 1962. After this, he did not look back. National as well as state politics embraced this son of soil and opened million miles stretched fields of success for him. He very artistically proved the iron of his wisdom and was made a leader of Congress in 1975. He was the reservoir of innovative ideas. It was because of his foresightedness in politics that he was raised from State politics and was given a prominent place in National politics in 1986 when he was appointed as Union Minister for Tourism in the ministry of Rajiv Gandhi. After this, his appointment as a Union Home Minister in 1989 established him as a multidimensional politician. As he was an institution in himself soon he decided not to follow the foot prints of others and dared to make his own foot prints to be followed by the generations to come. His real leadership qualities encouraged him and he launched his own ideological world in the form of his own party PDP in 1999.
It was the time, when people of J&K had no other option but to follow NC leaders. But when Mufti appeared before Kashmiri youth and showed the dying Kashmiri generation a light of hope of peace, his popularity gained momentum overnight and PDP appeared as ray of hope to the militancy exploited J&K. Mufti came up with a slogan (Goli se nahi bat bene gi boli se) that it is not gun but dialogue which can save state from militancy. It was the time when insurgency in the state was at peak, it was the time when state was burning, and it was the time when a few Kashmiri youth were obsessed with the idea of joining militant ranks. In this time when J&K was in the state of confusion and chaos Mufti's idea of starting cross-border trade and travel of divided families to either side of LoC was welcomed by one and all. That step had lowered down the tension on the LoC. It is because of this that the period between 2002 and 2005 when Mufti became Chief Minister is considered as most peaceful and innovative in the history of J&K.
His commendable jobs included construction of Mughal Road, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University and Islamic University. He was the personality with decision making quality. He possessed all the leadership qualities of head and heart. It was because of his dedication towards his work that J&K people had again showed their faith in him and again gave him the chance to become Chief Minister of the state. But this time Mufti had a very challenging situation before him. Being a statesman and a foresighted politician, he respected people's verdict of Jammu division and joined hands with BJP in order to steer the state on the path of development. This decision had established him as a true statesman and a visionary politician.
He used to talk about his dream of converting J&K into a peaceful and fully developed state but God did not give him enough time so that he could translate his dream of converting state into a peaceful place. He breathed his last on 7th Jan, 2016 in AIIMS, Delhi. No doubt, his death had come as a great shock for the people.
Let his soul rest in peace.
