Mehbooba takes the BJP bull by the horns for securing additional funds | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 16: It is a case of taking the bull by the horns when Mehbooba Mufti delayed taking her oath to become the State's first woman Chief Minister. Yes, she had the courage of taking the BJP bull by the horns when she made it clear to the Central Government that it had not fulfilled the commitments made by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, while announcing economic package for Jammu and Kashmir in November 2015. Earlier people and political leaders had believed that Mehbooba was delaying assuming the responsibility of Chief Minister because she was a bit confused after the Congress had offered unconditional support to her in the formation of the Government. Politicians had believed that Mehbooba was weighing pros and cons if she joined hands with the Congress after the PDP's image had received a drubbing because of its alliance with the BJP. But all this was simply part of the story and the real issue was financial assistance from the centre. The PDP was enraged over the cut in aid for the power sector which had not allowed the State Government to seek return of two major power projects run by the NHPC to the State sector. Hence the PDP wants additional financial help so that these two power projects could be purchased from the NHPC. The PDP leadership has come to believe that the financial aid the centre had sanctioned for flood affected people was too insufficient to help the affected people to make up for the losses they had suffered. The PDP wanted the centre to implement its commitment on converting Srinagar and Jammu into smart cities. Hence in short the differences that led to delay in taking the oath had economic contours and not political overtones. The BJP too could take the PDP bull by the horns by allowing the State to remain under the Governor's rule and later dissolve the Assembly to be followed by fresh election. However, the BJP lacked guts because it believes rightly that if early elections were announced the BJP would not be able to repeat its 2014 performance when it, for the first time, bagged 25 seats. The BJP top functionaries in the State believe that in case early elections were held it could not secure more than three to five seats because of the poor performance of the coalition Government and on account of bad performance of the BJP Ministers. Hence the political uncertainty in Jammu and Kashmir may continue till Mehbooba takes over as Chief Minister. Indications are that the centre has assured Mehbooba that it was willing to implement in toto the commitments it had made while announcing the economic package . |
