Early Times Report

Anantnag, Feb 19: Inhabitants of Marahama village in Bijbehara block of South Kashmir's Anantnag district Friday held protests against Rural Development Department alleging Irregularities in MGNREGA works.
Residents alleged that Rural Development Department officials, employees and some contractors backed by Peoples Democratic Party have drawn huge amount of money for the construction of roads in the village under center sponsored scheme MGNREGA but on ground the works have not been completed according to estimates.
"A few days ago Rural Development Department under MGNREGA started constructing a road from higher secondary School to Panzpora Marhama.
We came to know that the estimated cost of the road is 13 lakh rupees but in reality contractors used few truck loads of boulders and dust on the road. Surprisingly yesterday they announced to have completed the work, against we held protests and demanded probe as they haven't executed the works according to norms," Ashiaq Ramzan whol led the protests told Early Times.
He said that residents approached deputy Commissioner Anantnag Muneer-ul-Islam and sought action against the officials and employees involved.
Residents said that same rule was applied to other works as well the village and influential people with the help of RDD employees and officials have drawn huge bills against bogus works. They threatened to approach vigilance commission if the committee framed by Additional commissioner Development failed to submit true and factual report.
"Committee constituted by ACD visited the village and checked the works. They too felt that works haven't been executed according to norms. So now if committee failed to report facts we will approach vigilance," threatened villagers.
Meanwhile, Early Times learnt for its reliable sources that Additional Commissioner Development has taken a serious note of the allegations leveled by villagers and has asked the committee to submit report within a week.
