Madhav, Nirmal say AFSPA, NHPC projects not discussed with Mehbooba | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 19: The Wednesday evening one-on-one meeting between PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and BJP national general secretary and in-charge of J&K at the Fairview residence of the PDP leader seems to have worked. Both the parties have started making their stands public vis-a-vis government formation. While sources very close to PDP president disclosed that Mehbooba Mufti made it clear during the meeting that the PDP will not form government unless the Central leadership gave a categorical commitment that the agenda of alliance and whatever it contained shall be implemented in a definite timeframe, the BJP leaders have publicly said that Ram Madhav didn't discuss Armed Forces Special Powers Act and National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC)-controlled and managed projects with the PDP leader. Ram Madhav, who did not meet the waiting media persons after his one-hour-long meeting with Mehbooba Mufti at Srinagar and who briefed media persons in Delhi later clearly said that he didn't discuss with her the possibility of withdrawing AFSPA from certain districts of the state, especially Srinagar and Kathua districts. "There was no discussion on AFSPA during his meeting with PDP president," he said. Very significantly, the Defence Ministry on Thursday completely overruled the possibility of demilitarizing any area of the state, saying the security scenario in the state doesn't permit revocation of the AFSPA. The Indian Army has also made it loud and clear that if the soldiers are to combat militancy in the state, the AFSPA has to be there as it gives them some legal immunity. The statement of Ram Madhav and the stand of the Indian Defence Ministry could be construed that both the parties have to take a middle path. If in New Delhi Ram Madhav said that he didn't discuss AFSPA with the PDP leader, here in Jammu former Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh disclosed that Ram Madhav also didn't discuss the issue of return of the NHPC-managed power projects with Mehbooba Mufti. "Return of power projects from NHPC didn't figure in the meeting. The PDP did not set any condition during the meeting but it was stressed upon that both parties should govern on the basis of already formulated Agenda of Alliance," he said. |
