Election Board: Mehbooba's masterstroke | | | Early Times Report Srinagar. Feb 19: A day after BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti in Srinagar, in a surprise move PDP constituted its Election Board on Thursday sending everyone, including the BJP into a tizzy. "The PDP President Mehbooba Mufti has constituted party's Election Board with Senior leader Ab Rehman Veeri as its Chairman and Dhaman Bhasin and Flail Singh its members," a PDP spokesman said in a statement Political observers and analysts while talking to Early Times expressed surprise over the PDP decision while a few of them termed it as a "pressure tactics." "If PDP has started structured dialogue with BJP to form the government then what was the need to constitute the ElectionBoard," asked an observer. He said, "It's strange that party wants to reshuffle its leaders amidst negotiations taking place with the BJP. Is it that PDP is preparing for elections or it wants to build pressure on BJP." Sources said the PDP has realized that negotiations with the BJP can go either way round. "PDP has already launched a membership drive and has asked its cadres to be ready. It proves that party leadership knows it very well that lines have been drawn and BJP would have to make an extraordinary effort to reach out to the PDP," sources added. They said the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, who is tipped to become the first woman Chief Minister of JK, would be arriving in Delhi in a day or two to attend the Parliament session and its one more indication of the fact that government formation in JK is likely to take more time. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "PDP constituting the Election Board should serve as an eye opener for the BJP leaders in the state who don't miss a single chance to claim that PDP-BJP alliance is intact. Their desperation for power has exposed them and they don't stand anywhere." He said, "Another factor which is preventing PDP and BJP from joining hands at this point of time is the JNU controversy which has become a major issue. PDP has already extended its support to Kashmiri students and has asked the Centre and the State governments not to harass Kashmiris, while on the other hand BJP is demanding stern action against the people who were involved in anti-national activities." The analyst said, "On one hand BJP wants action against the anti-national elements on the other hand it's desperate to join hands with the Kashmir based party. BJP cannot sail in two boats it has to make its stand clear." |
