Report about hydro power puts previous regimes in tight spot | | | Peerzada Ummer
Srinagar, Feb 19: At a time when return of power projects from the NHPC is being pitched, the startling revelations are coming to fore about how much the state of Jammu and Kashmir has a potential to earn from its hydro power. The documents in possession of the Early Times reveal that a mere 10 percent of total hydro power is being utilised in the state. The recent report about the hydro power potential in the state has claimed that due to untapping of the resources, Rs 87673.75 crore are lost annually. The report besides puncturing the claims of the helmsmen in transforming the Jammu and Kashmir in an epitome of development has also unmasked the inaction of the successive regimes of the state in utilizing the abundant resources. Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC) though have 20 hydroelectric projects but it produces a mere of 719.8 MWs electricity hence contributing in no way to get the state out of the power paucity at large. On the contrary, NHPC has three main projects which include Salal, Dul-Hasti and Uri. These three power projects produce 1560 MW of power. Report reveals that Jammu and Kashmir has a potential to produce 22,000 MW of power. Ironically, it produces a mere 1567.70 MW of electricity. Report says that the annual energy loss is being witnessed every year 60,000 million units valuing Rs 30,000 crores. The report claims that if the unattended hydro power is utilized in the state, the per capita income of people will rise from Rs 30000 to Rs 131600 proceeding to Delhi with per capita income of Rs 118000 and Haryana with Rs 71781. The report says this development will promote Jammu Kashmir as the first richest region in South Asia. Total identified potential of River Jhelum is 3560 MW potential of which only 750.1 MWs have been tapped and projects under construction will produce 570 MWs. River Chenab has the highest potential of 10360 MWs of which only 1563.8 MWs have been tapped and further 450 MWs are under construction. Indus is the third biggest source of hydro power in Jammu Kashmir with the total capacity of 2060 MWs of which only 13.3 MWs have been harnessed and 90.26 MWs are under construction. River Ravi has a potential of 500 MWs of power and 25.8 percent have been tapped and still 74.2 percent is available. With People's Democratic Party (PDP) asking the Centre to implement the Agenda of Alliance, it is widely being considered that the return of two power projects from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) to the state could set the ball rolling. There are also reports that if the power projects are returned to the state by the NHPC, same would for sure pave way for state's overall development with industrialisation in the already cash starved state to witness a new boom. |
