Modi-Mehbooba meeting soon | BJP seeks meeting before Feb 23 Budget session, PDP says better later | | Govt formation
Hyder Ali Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 19: Inching towards prospects of government formation in the state, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming days. Highly placed sources said following the fruitful talks between BJP's point man on Kashmir Ram Madhav and Mehbooba on February 17 at her residence here, decks are being cleared to fix the next level of talks. Source said Madhav immediately after flying back to New Delhi conveyed it Modi and the BJP President Amit Shah that the talks had "remained fruitful as expected." He equally deliberated upon the demands as hinted at by the PDP needed for government formation. "Infact Madhav Ji has already conveyed to her(Mehbooba) that she would meet Modi Ji as things have been much on track over the government formation in the state," the sources told Early Times. But there's lack of consensus over the date of the talks. Sources said while the BJP looks ahead for the Modi-Mehbooba talks before the commencement of the Union budget in the Parliament scheduled for February 23, PDP wants the high level talks be held after the commencement of the budget. "Basically we look ahead for some special announcements on Jammu and Kashmir at the Union budget and once the same is done, the talks will be held," a PDP leader toldEarly Times. Sources said the BJP is likely to announce special economic incentives for the state including handover of National Hydro Power Corporation-owned power projects, particularly the Salal, and some sops for the unemployed youth of the state. "The only thing which is yet to be finalized is consensus over the revocation of AFSPA from any of the two districts in Jammu and Kashmir provinces on pilot basis. Once it's done, the pact will be sealed," said a PDP leader. He said the party has come to the conclusion that it was better to fix modalities for alliance with the BJP than to go for re-elections which again can throw a hung mandate. The BJP on the other hand has been desperate to get back to power to improve its face in the Jammu province where the party miserably failed to come up to the expectations of the people, who feel ignored. "For BJP it's the first and the last chance, because the kind of impression the people of Jammu got in the last ten months of governance has been pathetic… In case of any fresh elections, the BJP is likely to get a big zero," said a political analyst from Jammu, where the people have been up in arms against the rightwing party and its "misadventures". The PDP-BJP alliance in the state came to an end with the death of then Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed who breathed his last on January 7. Two days later, on January 9, Governor’s rule was imposed in the state. Since then the PDP President has been reluctant to continue the alliance even as she recently said government formation was only possible if the central government takes some CBMs for the state. Mehbooba's firm stand of not being power hungry has fetched her accolades in Kashmir with people terming her the "iron-willed lady of Kashmir." |
