Jammu, Feb 23: The Division of Fruit Science, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu, SKUAST-J organized one day training cum awareness programme on at Chainpura, Kathua, Jammu on rejuvenation technology on old and unproductive orchards in Jammu province in the Amla orchard. The programme was organized under Mission for Integrated Development in Horticulture (MIDH), in orchard of Ch. Gulzar Ahmed identified by Talvinder Singh, Chief Horticulture Officer, Kathua. Dr. Parshant Bakshi, Principal Investigator of the project highlighted the need for rejuvenation of old/unproductive Amla orchards so that a commercial and quality produce could be harvested. A decline in productivity of orchard could largely be due to poor photosynthetic efficiency besides several other factors including age of the orchard, dense and intermingling branches, neglected and poor management of orchard. The participants (HDO's, farmers and orchardists) were educated about various methods of rejuvenation of old/unproductive trees that are no longer in bearing or bear very little. Dr. VK Wali deliberated on the importance of imparting vigour to the plant so that the plant can bear to its maximum and the farmer in return gets a good value per unit of land. The farmers/orchardists were apprised about the success story of rejuvenation by Division of Fruit Science in the mango orchards of Jammu and the same work will be taken up in Amla under this project. |
