Early Times Report

poonch, Feb 23:The members of Panchayat Association Mendhar on Tuesday locked the office of Block Development Officer alleging that pick and choose policy was being adopted by him in distribution of government cement allotted for MGNREGA works.
Sources said Block Development Officer Tariq Aziz has reportedly received approximately 15000 cement bags which was distributed among various panchayats for the ongoing development works going on in the area under MGNREGA.
The BDO, allegedly adopted the pick and choose policy and distributed the cement among the blue eyed contractors where as other contractors were ignored sources said, adding after receiving the complaint the then ACD Poonch Bashrat Ahmed directed BDO to allot 250 bags to each Panchayat and it was ensured that contractor of every class gets his due quota. However, this practice remained in force for some time only.
Recently the misappropriation in cement distribution came fore where ward nos 2 and 3 of Jughal panchayat were allotted 1100 cement bags and ward nos 1,4,5,6 of the same panchayat received not even a single bag of the cement, sources said.
The under taken works were stopped by the contractors for want of cement and they along with Panchayat at Members registered a complaint against BDO in writing with Sub Divisional Magistrate Mendhar Thakur Sher Singh where as people of the area staged a protest demonstration against the authorities.
The SDM directed SHO Mendhar SI Shabir Ahmed to pacify the protesters who locked the BDO office with the active support of Panchayat members and the president of Sarpanch Association Showket Ahmed. Meanwhile SHO Mendhar pacified the protesters and assured them that action would be initiated against the accused, sources said, adding the protesters later lifted the dhama and allowed the stranded vehicles in the Godown to move out .
