Early Times Report

BARAMULLA, Feb 24: Nearly 50 shops and other business establishments were gutted in a devastating fire at main market in the border town of Uri in this North Kashmir district on Tuesday night.
Sources said that during the intervening night of Feb 23-24 at around 2:00 am fire broke out in the Uri market complex. The fire was caused possibly due to an electrical short-circuit from one of the shops. The fire engulfed about 50 to 60 shops in a jiffy.
Fire broke out in the shopping complex of Mushtaq Ahmad Chowdhary and Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh and spread to entire market area before the fire tenders could reach the spot, sources said.
"Huge flames were coming out of a shop, we rushed towards the main market to extinguish the fire, but it went out of control and engulfed whole shopping complex in no time," said a shopkeeper while sharing views with Early Times.
Sources said that the only one fire tender in Uri town failed as the tank of it was half empty, and by the time many shops were gutted. Fire tenders were called in from Baramulla, Sopore and Sangrama to extinguish the flames, which were visible from several kilometers.
President Beopar Mandal Uri, Assadullah Lone said that about 100 shops and 50 Godowns were gutted in the fire. He said that the nearby army camp Uri immediately swung into action and doused as many shops as they could.
"The administration does not pay any heed to our demands. We have been pleading them for fire stations in our villages but there is no response from past many years. The loss of property is worth in crores as about 50-60 shops including Godowns were gutted in the fire," said a local resident.
Meanwhile, SDM Uri Showkat Ahmad Rather said that devastating fire broke out at 2 am and gutted 44 structures including Godowns. He said that fire tenders were pressed into service due to which other shops were saved in time.
He said that police and civil administration are investigating the cause of fire adding that a detailed report would be sent to Deputy Commissioner Baramulla on Thursday.
