Agitated over bovine smuggling locals block Manwal-Udhampur road

Udhampur, Feb 24: The residents from Manwal of Majalta Tehsil of Udhampur district today held a strong protest against police for allegedly failing to check the bovine smuggling and also blocked Udhampur -Pathankot Dhar road for hours following an attempt to smuggle bovine animals to valley in a truck which met with an accident near Manwal late night .
According to the police sources, a Truck bearing registration number JK02AG-7977 on its way from Mansar to Kashmir at near Manwal skidded of the road and some locals seen from the vehicles loaded bovine animals immediately called the Police and villagers block the Manwal to Udhampur road and raised slogan against police department. "The incident led to tension in the area with people holding demonstration on the road. The vehicular traffic remained suspended for nearly two hours and people lifted their dharna and police officials reached there and assured them of stern action against the accused, police sources said. They said that Majalta police during the thorough search, the vehicles loaded with 17 bovine of which two were killed died while rest of bovine animals were rescued and vehicle was seized. Sources said Driver and smuggler escaped while a case under FIR No 10/16 u/s 188/RPC 3 PCA Act stands registered at Police Station Majalta further investigation of the case is going on. Irate villagers raised barricades on the road and suspended the movement of traffic on Dhar road and started protest against the Police authorities and State Government. Alleging that local SHO and police are hand in glow with bovine smugglers, protestors alleged that police allows the bovine smuggling in the late night hours. Meantime local police rushed to the spot and pursued the protestors to lift dharna from the road which they refused. Later, DySP (Hqrs) along with some force reached there and assured protestors that he will take cognizance into their allegations to identify the accused. On his assurance of the senior police officer, the protestors lifted their dharna. Meanwhile SSP Udhampuyr Suleman Choudhary rejected the allegation of police laxity against bovine smuggling and added that police party was chasing the truck used for smuggling and in a bid to dodge police the smuggler's truck met with accident.
