Early Times report

Kulgam, Feb 24: Exhibiting bravery, a retired head constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday pounced assailants, who attempted to snatch his service rifle at Qimoh Kulgam.
According to police sources, a group of unidentified youth attacked Shafiq Ahmad, a retired head constable, who is working as guard in State Bank of India at Qaimoh Kulagm this afternoon, with Chili powder and tried to snatch his service rifle but the guard to the surprise of assailant pounced back the assailants bravely and foiled the weapon snatching bid.
"Assailants sprayed chili powered cop's face while performing his duties outside the SBI Branch. They (Assailants) after spraying chili powder tried to snatch his rifle but he gave them a stiff resistance and failed their attempt," eyewitnesses told Early Times.
They said that cop also cried for help which drew the attention of people in busy Qaimoh market forcing assailants to flee from the spot.
"After failing to snatch rifle, motorcycle borne Assailants escaped from the scene," they added.
Soon after the incident, Police and army teams rushed to the spot and started investigating the matter.
Confirming the incident, a senior official said that they have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits. "Few names who could be part of this attack have surfaced," he said, adding, "youths who might have planned the attack will be detained after completion of legal process in this regard." SP Kulgam, Mumtaz Ahmad said investigation is going on as "our team is working on it."
