Mukherjee's message for Pakistan and for politicians in India | | | President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, has two messages which he delivered during his ad dress to the joint session of the Parliament on the opening day of the budget session in New Delhi on Tuesday. One message was meant for Pakistan. And in this message Mukherjee reiterated India's commitment to build friendly ties with Pakistan. He also repeated India's commitment to counter terrorism which he said had assumed global dimensions calling for all nations to join hands for fighting terrorism. He has stated that the Government of India was fully committed to firmly dealing with all challenges concerning the security of the country, adding that terrorism being a global threat needed strong counter-terrorism measures which were necessary to eradicate it completely throughout the world. The President of India had a word of praise for the security forces while dealing with January 2 terror strike at Pathankot air base. He has congratulated the security forces in successfully foiling the recent attack at the Pathankot air base by terrorists. Firm and effective steps will be taken to deal with any situation arising out of cross-border terrorism," he said. And that the Government of India is committed to forging a mutually respectful relationship with Pakistan and in creating an environment of cooperation in combating cross border terrorism, He said the government believed in a secure and prosperous future for the neighbourhood while committing itself to the principle of 'the world is one family. Hope this message from the President of India is heeded by Pakistan and stop using its soil for exporting terror to India. Pakistan is sure to gain, gain a lot, if Islamabad promotes cordial ties with New Delhi. In fact despite severe provocation in the shape of repeated violations of the border ceasefire, terror strike whether in Mumbai or at Pathankot air base New Delhi has tried to promote friendly relations with its neighbor. And since the last over one year of Narendra Modi heading the Government of India Prime Minister of India has evinced interest in maintaining friendly relations with all the neighbours of India, particularly with Pakistan, China, Bangladesh and Nepal. During this one Modi travelled to all these nations with the sole purpose of ensuring the establishments in Islamabad, Beijing, Kathmandu and Dhaka that New Delhi needed to be trusted because by promoting cordial ties with India small countries like Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh could be gainers as better ties would promote trade and people to people contact. What seems to be interesting is the way Modi had series of meetings with Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, in order to reopen the channels of dialogue. But on every occasion when India was about to reopen the doors for talks Pakistan, its agencies and extremists triggered some untoward incident which had forced New Delhi, on a couple of occasions, to either call off the proposed talks and postpone them. Hence it is the duty of Islamabad to create an atmosphere which could prove conducive for sustained and meaningful dialogue. President Mukherjee has an important message for political parties in India telling them to remain prepared for constructive deliberations and for respecting the Parliamentary proceedings and procedures. Parliament reflects the supreme will of the people and criticized disruption and obstruction and called upon all MPs to discharge their responsibilities in a spirit of cooperation and mutual accommodation. While outlining government's agenda in the coming financial year, Mukherjee also declared that the government will constantly strive for smooth and constructive conduct of Parliamentary business He rightly reminded the opposition parties, especially the Congress that democratic temper calls for debate and discussion, and not disruption or obstruction. He assured the two Houses that the Government will constantly strive for smooth and constructive conduct of Parliamentary business. He urged all Members of Parliament to discharge their solemn responsibilities in a spirit of cooperation and mutual accommodation. "Let us all collectively endeavour to build a flourishing and prosperous India," he said. Mukherjee's remarks assume significance in the context of repeated disruption of business on various issues, loss of time of Parliament and the stalling of legislative business in the Rajya Sabha where the government lacks majority. Thus it is hoped that the opposition, particularly the Congress, attach importance to Mukherjee's message and do not get ready for ensuring washing out of the budget session on the pattern of washing out of the monsoon session of parliament. Since the Government plans to introduce number of bills besides the general and railways budget it is better for the opposition to adopt a constructive role. |
