Unsafe Bridge across flood channel feared to prove disastrous
'Govt aware, allows heavy vehicles to ply'

Srinagar, Mar 4: Mehjoor Nagar Bridge is feared to prove disastrous for thousands of people who everyday drive this link across flood spill channel in south City.
The Bridge has been declared unsafe for vehicular traffic by the R&B department.
Official documents reveal that in a letter vide No SE/LAC/23584-88, the R&B officials has informed the Chief Engineer that bridge is unsafe for any vehicular movement.
"Due to construction of (JCRB) flyover and subsequent diversion of traffic, the Mehjoor Nagar bridge across the flood spill channel may encounter rush of vehicles thereby endangering the human lives as the existing bridge stands already declared unsafe for vehicular traffic," the letter reads.
The letter further reads "In light of above it is requested that the said bridge may kindly be declared closed for any type of vehicular traffic to avoid any mishap,".
One of the officials of the R&B department said that the bridge is feared to prove disastrous for people who everyday drive through this link. "we have already declared Bridge as unsafe for movement of heavy vehicles but the traffic cops are allowing the heavy passenger, and commercial vehicles to ply over it,".
He said that even movement of light vehicles is feared to prove disastrous. "The bridge is of timber structure and is very old. Most of the bridge parts are badly damaged. The vertical members acting as piers of the bridge are damaged / broken and are not strong enough to resist any class of vehicular loading.
The decking of bridge is also sunken / deflected from its original position and cross members are also damaged," he said.
Meanwhile the locals alleged that though they have brought the matter in the notice of the higher authorities but there is no response. "We have brought the matter into the notice of the Divisional commissioner Kashmir but there is no response. Now we appeal Governor to intervene and look into the matter,".
The local residents alleged that police and civil administration is sleeping over the issue only to appease higher authorities by facilitating smooth work on the JCRB flyover.
They said that though they put barricade on both sides of the Bridge to prevent movement of heavy vehicles but it was removed by the unknown persons. "Now the bridge is feared to prove disastrous for people crossing it," they said.
