Dry irrigation canals irk farmers | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 4: Despite prediction made by the Metrology Department announcing rain shortfall this season, the irrigation water has neither been released in the canals nor the process of annual de-silting and cleansing of the canals has yet been started putting the farmers in a difficult situation. The sources informed Early Times that canals continue to be dry filled with mud and filth and every year the de-silting of canals are inordinately delayed for unknown reasons added further saying that the passive approach of the administration has kept the farmers on tenterhooks eventually banking upon the mercy of the State Government. The sources further told that agriculture is the backbone and main source of earnings for the farmers in R.S.Pura area who substantially contribute towards the economy of the State with small farmers squarely depending upon produce of crops and season grass for their livelihood and nourishment of their animals, they bemoaned. While talking to Early Times, Sardari Lal of Maralia R.S.Pura said that he sowed grass in the month of November but in vain as water was not available. Narrating tale of woe, he said that wheat crop has declined causing great loss to the farmers. "The farmers are desperate with no one from the Government to address our genuine grievances", he alleged, hoping that the present Governor administration shall take cognizance of the difficulties. |
