PHE deptt makes excess payment worth lakhs as exempted excise duty to supplier | | | Arun Singh
Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 4: In an alleged well hatched conspiracy, the Public Health Engineering Department of the State has made payments of excise duty to the tune of lakhs of rupees to a supplier on the purchase of pipes who was actually exempted from payment of central excise duty in sheer violation of norms. "An excise duty of Rs 6 lakh was paid to the supplier for supply of mild steel pipes who was exempted from payment of central excise duty thereby resulting in extra payment of Rs 6 lakh which however could have been avoided but deliberately was not done, "they alleged. They alleged that some officials got monetary benefits from the supplier out of this payment which was totally against the rules which were ignored ostensibly to provide extra benefits to the suppler and causing loss to the state exchequer. Sources informed that department did not stop here to make blunder in making payment to the suppliers as in an over dozen of cases it reimbursed the payment to the tunes of crores of rupees as entry tax without documentary evidence some M&P Division in the state. "As a matter of fact no documentary proof in support of the claim that the tax was actually paid, was obtained from the suppliers before releasing the payment of entry tax to them, "they said. |
