'Vested interests want separate transport union' | Divide and rule? | | Muhammad Mukaram Early Times Report Khrew, Mar: 20: The conflict between two villages in Khrew area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district over the ongoing issue of separate transport union continues to procrastinate even as the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir directed the authorities to resolve the issue. The administration, however, has failed to end the impasse. Business activities have come to a halt following the demand of a separate union in the area adjacent to Kashmir's hub of cement industrial estate Khrew. The Khrew transport union is feeling dejected due to administrative apathy and also by the behavior of nearby Halqa Nagandar over the demand to establish a separate union, which according to locals of Khrew, seems to be a conspiracy to divide and rule the transport service providers in the area. "Over the last few decades, the Khrew belt had been carrying smoothly cement bags in their own trucks from these cement industries to their destinations under one banner headed by Zaffron Truck Union. The sudden demand by the Halqa Nagandar for a separate union seems fishy," a trucker said. "The demand of our neighboring village for a separate truck union seems a clear divide and rule policy planned by influential people. We want all trucks should run under one united banner," the Khrew trucker added. Progress on resolving the conflict seems difficult. Khrew residents claim according to the state authorities at the district level, efforts to reduceconflict over separate unionism between the two villages has been made by mapping the alternative decisions. "Although in practice this is not acceptable to almost 1000 truckers. Perhaps the administration could look for one time solutions to these problems and issues that would benefit all the stake holders," another trucker said. The area has almost 1000 trucks, which runs and carries cement from these giant cement factories, some truckers claim that they have sold their agriculture land badly affected by these factories, so that they can earn their bread and butter by owing trucks. However, over one and half Month Halqa Nagandar has blocked the roads leading to cement industries. The cement supply is on halt and industries has stopped the production as well as a result of which the cement prices have not only skyrocketed at several places but also stalled many government and private run projects in the state. There are giant cement factories in the area that cater to bulk of the cement market in Kashmir. The closure of these units has resulted in sharp decrease in the supply to market. On an average, the factories in the area supply 250 to 300 truckloads of cement to the market per day. "For last one and a half months the supply has been affected also due to the blockade of road by the Halqa Nagandar due to their anger over separate union," Khrew trucker said. Several union members claim the demand for a parallel union for transport services can no way be beneficial to the people demanding it. "It will instead cause problems for the truckers if the union is decentralized and further result in an imbalance in the decision making in future," he said. "The rates for transport services can also be fluctuated and both the unions will be held hostage against each other while as the third party can only manipulate and maneuver the decision taken in future," he added. The union members say, it is highly likely that the demand for a separate union is a sinister design created by vested interests. "We must first understand the pros and cons of this demand and the results thereof and realize who are the real beneficiaries if conflicy perdists. |
