Most water supply schemes defunct at Rajouri

Rajouri, Mar 28: Most of the Water supply schemes in Rajouri district executed during last more 20 years either have become defunct or non-existent due to careless approach by the concerned officials and bad planning.
At many places in far off areas in Budhal, Kotranka, Darhal, Thanamandi, Manjakot, Kalakote, Nowshera and Sunderbani tehsils the water source of PHE schemes have dried up or vanished during 2008 major earth quake and 2014 floods.
Inhabitants of many remote villages and small towns at present struggling for getting safe and pure drinking water and have been holding protest demonstrations at many places against the PHE department and district administration. Not to talk about the far off areas but inhabitants of Rajouri town also getting contaminated and un- filtered water in their taps results in various ailments.
Though the sources of drinking water are subjected to contamination and require appropriate treatment to remove disease causing contaminants but the filter plant established by PHE department about 40 years ago at Danidhar (Rajourti town) has no such facilities and releasing contaminated water.
Due to contaminating water (even due to rotten pipes of distribution system of PHE department) the inhabitants of the town and other parts of the district falling prey to diseases like gastrointestinal illness, reproductive problems etc.
Meanwhile, the inhabitants of Kotranka town and adjoining areas have held a protest demonstration against PHE department alleging that they are getting contaminated water supply that too once in a week. Protesting people have warned the PHE officials to mitigate their problem of safe drinking water on regular basis otherwise they will come on the roads. Inhabitants of Dungi block have also threatened to come on the roads against Public Health Engineering (PHE) department Officials if they failed to improve the supply of drinking water in their areas.
"For the last many months the department has been supplying water once in ten days that too for very less period. People finding very hard to store water supplied by PHE department for drinking purpose" said Roshan Lal and Yash Pal.
