Training on walnut plants' propagation organized | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 30: Scientists of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu organized one day training programme on 'low cost propagation of walnut under poly house conditions' at Bhaderwah under guidance of Prof. Pradeep K. Sharma, Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-Jammu and Dr. J.P. Sharma, Director Research of SKUAST-Jammu. Principal Investigator of the Network Project and Scientist Incharge of the Regional Horticulture Research Sub-station Bhaderwah, Dr Mahital Jamwal advised the participants to undertake the practice of propagation of walnut plants under low cost poly houses to increase their propagation survivality. He told the farmers that the vegetative propagation of walnut under poly house conditions can provide the optimum conditions for its propagation and produce the planting material of known quality with a higher success rate as compared to open conditions. The budded and grafted walnut plants comes into bearing in much shorter time as compared to the seedling walnut plants which normally takes 12-15 years to reach their commercial bearing. He emphasized that the propagation of walnut plants may be undertaken using high quality plant material for stock and scion preferably with commercial cultivars. Dr. Neeraj Kotwal advised the farmers about plant protection measures to be taken against insect pests and diseases during the propagation of walnut plants in the nurseries. He also suggested control measures against insects and diseases in the walnut plant nurseries and during their propagation under poly houses and more humid conditions. Bhaskar Singh, Senior Research Fellow in the Network Project talked about the importance of walnut propagation through budding and grafting. Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (CITH), Srinagar is the Nodal Agency of the ICAR Network Project on Outreach of Technologies for Temperate Fruit Crops. |
