Workshop on bamboo cultivation held | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 30: One day state level workshop on "Promotion of Bamboo Cultivation in J&K was held at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu. The workshop was organized by the Division of Agroforestry, SKUAST-Jammu under the National Bamboo Mission (NBM), GoI. Around 100 participants including officers from the departments of Soil and water conservation, J&K State Forest Research Institute and Department of Agriculture and farmers from the districts of Jammu, Samba and Kathua attended the workshop. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Dr. P. K. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu who stressed upon the need to harness the scope of bamboo in the state. He impressed on the collaboration among the university and the State Government Departments of Forest and Agriculture for the development of propagation technologies and its promotion in the region. He also emphasized on the need for developing marketing strategies for bamboo products for improving the livelihood of the farmers. A K Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, J&K was the guest of honour. He suggested that promotion of bamboo in the state needs to be taken up in a collaborative mode with SKUAST-Jammu and the farmers. He also announced that very shortly a Bamboosetum is coming up on an area of 100 acres in Jammu. |
