Mehbooba clips babus' wings: No foreign trips | | | Early Times Report srinagar, May 13: Baringing an end to lavish foreign trips for bureaucrats who would often do it in the name of promotion of Jammu and Kashmir state, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has clipped wings for such prospective travel. Over the years, officials would frequently travel abroad at government expenses, in the name of "bringing business fortunes" for the state or to "gain experience and insight of international exposure." But such trips, as per insiders, often proved nothing beyond personal amusement of government functionaries at the cost of public money. Sources said in the latest, at least four officials who were scheduled to visit Middle East and Europe, have been outright denied the permission for "lavish holidaying at the cost of state exchequer." The sources said apart from Tourism department, officials from Housing and Industries departments, were planning for trips abroad. But their dreams shattered due to a categorical no from the "Iron Lady". Mehbooba is understood to have had inputs that during the previous regimes such adventures remained fruitless for the state. "Not a single potential client from the middle-east turned up to Jammu and Kashmir with any business prospects while all the trips managed during the NC regime proved total waste of public money," said a top businessman. Over the years, officials and ministers of the concerned department, would often go for foreign trips, and stay there for weeks together. But now it's likely to be an uphill task. Mehbooba's firm stand is being seen in line with the decision of the central government that its officials undertaking foreign trips will have to clearly spell out the outcome of such tours. The move comes against the backdrop of persistent feeling in many quarters that the trips, ostensibly for gaining experience and insights, often turn into pleasure jaunts. There have been cases of officials traveling abroad in numbers more than necessary, stretching the duration of stay and visiting and stopping at places irrelevant to the stated purpose of the trip. Sources said in future if any official travels abroad or to other states with the "aim of getting business for the state," he or she will subsequently have to tangibly prove outcome of such expenditures. "Failures will have to face action," officials said. "At the time when government wants austerity, such pleasure voyages cannot be allowed unless there's something genuinely beneficial for the state," said a top official. |
