Srinagar, June 17: As many as 2,899 people have lost their lives and over 24,800 injured in separate road accidents during the last three years in Jammu and Kashmir, which has witnessed a marginal decline in the number of such cases. According to officials, the data shows a decline in the number of road accidents during the last three years. A total of 6,469 accidents occurred in 2013 in which 990 people were killed and 8,681 injured. In 2014, altogether 5,861 accidents took place killing 992 people and injuring 8,043. Similarly, in 2015, as many as 917 people were killed and 8,132 injured in 5,836 mishaps. "Government is taking various measures to ensure effective and efficient regulation of traffic system in the state," the sources said. The vehicular traffic over the years has increased manifold in the state. "The cities of Srinagar and Jammu being the commercial hubs and capital cities of the state have taken lead in registration of vehicles," they said. With a view to ensuring effective and efficient regulation of traffic, the state has been divided into five traffic zones, which includes Traffic Srinagar City (covering Srinagar district), Traffic Srinagar Rural, Traffic City Jammu, Traffic Rural Jammu and Traffic National Highway, saying that each traffic zone works under the charge of SP. They said that against a sanctioned strength of 1,481, presently 1,126 police personnel are posted in the Traffic Police Department for regulation of traffic. In addition, 356 police personnel have been attached along with post from Executive cadre and 64 from Armed cadre for regulation of traffic. Further, 33 women police personnel and 221 SPOs are temporarily attached with the Traffic Police department exclusively for regulatory work, he added. They said that there are several factors responsible for road accidents, with primary causes as poor condition of roads, inadequate road width, in-adequate infrastructure, lack of traffic discipline, overloading, rooftop loading, over-speeding, triple ridding on two-wheelers, use of mobile phones while driving under the influence of liquor. Various departments including traffic, Roads and Buildings (R&B), Housing and Urban Development Department and Municipal Corporations have adopted coordinated approaches and have taken a series of short and long term measures to ensure proper traffic management resulted in considerable reduction in the number of accidents. They said Traffic Department has also taken various preventive and punitive measures which include strict enforcement of traffic laws under relevant provisions of the 'Motor Vehicles Act', to check the traffic violations. |
