Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 17: With major political parties failing to woo migrant voters in Jammu and other parts of country, there is no enthusiasm among the Kashmiri Pandit voters from the Anantnag Assembly Segment where bye elections are to be held on June 22.
The Kashmiri Pandits from Anantnag Assembly segment leading an exiled life in various parts of country since 1989-90 have lost interest in bye elections as the leaders of all three major political parties which have fielded their candidates for June 22 bye elections have so far failed to woo them.
The Pandits from Anantnag said that no political leader from three major political parties including Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), National Conference (NC) and Congress have approached the displaced Pandits for vote till date.
According to sources the PDP which has fielded the Party chief and Chief Minster Mehbooba Mufti to contest the bye elections from this Assembly Segment has not also made any appeal to migrant voters seeking their support and vote for June 22 elections. Same has been case with Congress and NC. No top leader of these two parties made any appeal to the migrant voters for vote despite the fact out of 84000 voters the total number of migrant voters in this Assembly Segment is about 4000.
Moreover to ensure one hundred percent participation of migrant voters in the bye poll the government has failed to do away with the M Form system which is a long pending demand of Kashmiri Pandits, sources said. The Kashmiri Pandits since exile have demanded that the cumbersome procedure of voting be done away with and they may be allowed to cast the vote on the basis of the voter lists and ration cards in their respective zones where they are registered to ensure their total participation in the elections. But the election authorities in the State as well as Election Commission of India failed to look into this demand, sources added.
Moreover the Kashmiri migrants scattered all vote country since the mass exodus are unable to cast their vote as there is no postal ballot facility for them too. Though this time Ms Mehbooba is herself a contestant and every vote matters for the contesting candidates to ensure their victory but she too could not do any thing in the matter to make easy the cumbersome process of migrants voting. Moreover there is no hard persuasion from the three leading political parties to seek migrants vote in the bye elections, sources said.
Under these circumstances the majority of migrants from this Assembly segment too will be unable to cast their vote, sources added. However some social organizations of Pandits from Anantnag have appealed the community to participate in the elections and also admired the support extended by PDP in development of the community shrines in the town besides solving other issues, the participation of migrant voters in the bye elections will be a low key affair.
