Baramulla, June 17: Security forces in a joint operation have eliminated two local militants today during a fierce encounter which took place in Sopore town of Baramulla district in North Kashmir.
"Locals have identified the slain militants as Altaf Ahmed of Gund Brath of Sopore town and Imtiyaz Ahmad of Wusun Sumbal of Bandipora district, police sources said.
Sharing details of the encounter a top police official said, "On a tip of information about the presence of militants, a joint team of Army's 22, 35 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) SOG and CRPF, SOG and police launched an anti-militancy operation in Bomai area of Sopore town this morning."
"Security forces cordoned the area in Bomai village and on seeing security forces nearing to them the holed up militants opened indiscriminate fire towards security forces which was retaliated promptly by security triggering a fierce encounter, the official told Early Times.
The official said that in the ensuing gunfight, one militant was killed in the initial firing after which second militant was also killed, adding that two AK-47 rifles and some ammunition were recovered from the slain militants.
The success for the security forces comes a day after four militants were killed in an anti -infiltration operation in Tanghdhar sector of Kupwara district near the Line of Control, while as one soldier was also killed in that operation, the official added.
Meanwhile locals of Bomai Sopore said panic gripped early morning when huge contingent of security forces including army, police and SOG cordoned off the whole area of Chana Mohalla and launched search operation to nab the militants.
"There was an exchange of fire from both the sides after which a fierce gun battle erupted due to which people left their homes and ran for safety," said local residents.
An eyewitness told that as soon as the operation ended, local residents started pelting stones at the security forces. The youth took to streets and started protest demonstration and raised pro-freedom slogans.
However it is learnt from senior army official who believes that today's encounter in Sopore is a big success for them as in two days six militants were killed in twin district of Baramulla and Kupwara of north Kashmir.
Here it needs to mention that earlier four militants were killed in an anti-infiltration operation in Tanghdhar sector of Kupwara district near the Line of Control, while as one soldier was also killed in that encounter, the official said.
