Anantnag, July 18: As many as over two hundred food depots of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) department are without supply in this troubled southern district, official sources revealed on Monday.
Sources said that department had dumped monthly supply at only 151 depots out of 450 till 8th of this month-the day security forces killed top Hizb commander Burhan Wani and his two associates in Bumdoora village of Kokernag.
However, the department has started distributing food grains in Anantnag town despite curfew and unstable situation.
Storekeepers risking their lives have come out to distribute the ration among consumers, CAPD department officials said. "Monthly supply was being dumped at centers but we couldn't dump at most centers because of the prevailing situation," they added.
Shortage of food grains has badly affected poor sections of society in the district particularly in rural areas.
"We are facing serve problems due to shortage of rice and other commodities," Khiram residents told Early Times.
Dozens of other villages in Bijbehara are too facing the shortage of food grains due to ongoing mayhem prevailing in Kashmir.
"Due to clampdown on telecommunication we aren't even able to bring the issue into the notice of authorities or Deputy Commissioner Anantnag," Bijbehara residents said.
A senior official admitting shortage of food grains on depots said that a few days ago miscreants attempted to set a vehicle on fire carrying LPG cylinders. "Miscreants can also attack our vehicles as well," he added.
CAPD department said that over seventy thousand (70,000) quintals of rice is available at FCI Mirbazar
Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Dr Syed Aabid Rashid Shah, when contacted assured to keep ration available on all centers. "We have started distribution process in Anantnag so in far off areas. Ration will be send to all those stores facing shortage," he said and hailed to efforts of CAPD department.
"Have drifted CAPD department to lift supply from FCI Mirbazar directly without wasting time," he added.
