Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 18: Even as Kashmir continues to be under strict curfew for the tenth consecutive day with the death of over 40 civilians and injuries to another 2500 people, the plight of security forces struggling to restore law and order by risking their lives goes unnoticed.
In fact, the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are bearing the brunt of the violence, triggered by separatists, militants and their handlers in Pakistan.
While two police personnel have been killed in protests so far, around 800 of them are wounded, including 200 with grievous injuries. Similar is the plight of CRPF personnel whose patrol parties and bunkers are being frequently targeted with stones, petrol bombs and even firearms. Source said around 100 security installations were attacked by the unruly mobs during last ten days.
Early Times has got access to official documents which reveal a tragic story of the attacks on security forces. Since July 8, when the Hizb commander Burhan Muzafar Wani and his two accomplices were killed in an encounter, the security forces are being constantly attacked.
Official documents said on July 9, when the funeral of militant trio was underway, the "unruly mobs attacked security forces, civil, police establishments, and vital installations throughout the valley."
"At many places the mobs forcibly tried to enter security force establishments with the intention to seize weapons and harm force personnel. Official documents reveal that "Unruly mobs set on fire GRP Guard room and RPF Barrack at Bijbehara Railway Station, Police Post Damhal Khushipora."
"Unruly mob also set on fire a single storied structure at Soibugh Budgam from where earlier Police Post Soibugh used to function."
In a major tragedy the mobs killed a policeman by throwing him into Jhelum along with his armored vehicle. "Hooligans pushed a Police vehicle along with the driver, Afroz Ahmad into the river Jhelum at Sangam resulting in death of the driver. An unruly mob attacked Fire Services vehicle which was on way to Sangam on a call near Bijbehara," the official documents reveal.
On the same Sunday, militants had a field day. "It has been seen that in the garb of law & order situations militants are firing and lobbing grenades on Police and CRPF personnel. Militants lobbed two grenades on CRPF deployed on law and order duties in Murran Chowk resulting in injuries to some CRPF personnel. In Shopian the vehicle of SP Shopian was fired upon and a grenade was also lobbed. Militants also fired upon the Police Post Uttressu," the police records reveal.
"A number of Police establishments and camps were also attacked during the day resulting in damage to the property and injuries to scores of Police and CRPF personnel," the records added.
As the situation declined to improve on July 11, the next day on July 12, "Miscreants set ablaze a police guard room at Gadbugh, a minority picket guard room at Batnag, Tral, and a guard room of P/P Ruhama in Pulwama."

On July 17, though police said "overall situation throughout Kashmir valley remained calm," policemen CRPF personnel and civilians received injuries in incidents of stone pelting in Kunzer Baramulla, Eidgah in Srinagar and Saderkote Bala in Bandipora."
A police official said the JKP was facing a tough situation in tackling the unruly mobs. "People think that we have unleashed a reign of terror on civilian population and that we don't have a human heart whereas the reality is that despite threat to our lives we have been exercising maximum restrain," said a senior police official.
Referring to the militant firing upon cops from within unruly mobs, he said: "Imagine when militants are hiding for attack within mobs how difficult it must be for us to exercise restrain when our own life is at stake." "Still we exercise restrain because the youth fighting on streets happens to be like our own children," he said.
CRPF PRO Rajesh Yadav said around 1000 paramilitary jawans received major injuries in the street protests. "The exact figures must be much higher as we are yet to consolidate the figures whereas communication breakdown through snapping of mobile services has left us void of updates," the PRO told Early Times adding "We are not getting most of the inputs."
A senior CRPF official asked the youth and the separatist leadership to introspect as to that what they achieve from targeting the jawans on duty.
"There's no point attacking forces, our vehicles. Even as we show maximum restrain, why don't they (protesters) raise their issues at correct forum than attack those who are on duty for public security and for restoration of law and order."
To a question on the use of pellet guns, which are being seen a deadly weapon having left over 100 blinded, he said the weapon was being least used. "We react only when there's threat to our lives, our weapons and our installations. And there also we exhibit maximum restraint," he said.
