Death toll reaches 46; MLA Pulwama sustains injuries | Woman among two killed at Qazigund | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 18: Two persons including a woman were killed when police and security forces opened fire on a group of protesters in Qazigund area of South Kashmir's Anantnag district in the evening today. Around one dozen persons sustained injuries during the clashes in different parts of valley. With today's killings the number of dead in continued violence has reached 46. Kashmir valley has been rocked by protests ever since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani in the evening of July 8. Meanwhile, a legislator of ruling Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) sustained injuries after he was attacked by a mob in South Kashmir's Pulwama district during the preceding night. In the meantime, chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has called for an all party meeting on July 21 to discuss the prevailing situation in the valley. Reports said that at least 10 persons were injured when security forces opened fire on protesters at Churhat-Qazigund in South Kashmir's Anantnag district in the evening today. The injured were shifted to different hospitals for treatment. Among the injured two persons including a woman succumbed to their injuries in a hospital in Srinagar. The identity of the deceased persons has not been ascertained as yet. Reports of clashes between security forces and youth have also come from Khrew area of Pampore in Pulwama district. Two civilians identified as Mushtaq Ahmad, hit by a teargas shell and Abid Ahmad, hit by pellets, have been removed to hospital in Srinagar. Two more civilians were also wounded during the clashes. A police spokesman said that overall situation throughout Kashmir valley remained under control. The police spokesman said that there was no report of any untoward incident from any part of the valley. "However, stray incidents of stone pelting were received from Hajin in Bandipora, Gogloosa Payeen in Kupwara, Kondbal, Mansbal in Ganderbal, Batmaloo in Srinagar and Khrew in Pampore. Some persons and police/CRPF men were injured in these incidents. A base camp store of potato seed belonging to Agriculture Department was set on fire in the Rafiabad area by miscreants," said the police spokesman. Reports said that PDP's MLA from Pulwama, Mohammad Khalil Bandh was injured after the driver of his car lost control over the vehicle after it came under stone pelting in Pulwama district during the intervening night of July 17 and 18. Bandh was on way to Pulwama from Srinagar when a mob pelted stones on his car with stones. Reports said the driver of the vehicle got nervous after coming under intense stone pelting and as such he could not keep control of the vehicle. This resulted into the overturning of the vehicle thus leading to injuries to MLA Bandh and his driver. The driver informed the police in Srinagar. Following the incident reinforcement to the area was sent from a nearby police station with Bandh being shifted to 92 Base Hospital of army in Srinagar. It has been learnt that the MLA was not hit by any stone, but received injuries when the fast-moving vehicle overturned. Giving details about the incident a state government spokesman said the official vehicle of MLA Bandh met with an accident in Pulwama town during the night intervening July 17/18 while he was travelling to his residence from Srinagar to Pulwama. "The legislator was rescued by the locals and shifted to the hospital where is condition is stated to be stable. The MLA has sustained fracture in leg and is being treated at a local hospital," said the government spokesman. In the meantime, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has convened an All Party Meeting at SKICC in Srinagar on 21 July 2016to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in Kashmir. An official spokesman said that invitation has been extended to all the political parties including PDP, BJP, National Conference, Congress, CPI(M), CPI, National Panthers Party, Democratic Party Nationalist, Peoples Democratic Front and others to discuss the prevailing situation and the measures to be taken to restore peace and normalcy in the Valley. Normal life continues to remain paralyzed across Kashmir due to the enforcement of restrictions and strike call given by the separatists All the districts of Kashmir continue to be under curfew or restrictions by state government. Strict curfew or restrictions were imposed in all the areas of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts. Barring the post paid mobile phones of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) the mobile phones are not working in the Kashmir valley. Mobile internet services and the rail service continue to be suspended ever since the valley was rocked by protests. For the third consecutive day the local newspapers failed to hit the newsstands in Kashmir valley. The state administration had on Saturday last issued directions to the editors of local newspapers of the valley to stop publication of the newspapers. Some of the printing presses were raided and subsequently sealed by police on the directions of the state government. |
