Drug menace rises alarmingly; 3 addicts die within 15 days in Rajouri

RAJOURI, July 18: The increasing incidents of drug abuse right under the nose of Rajouri police has claimed three lives due to over doses of drugs in Rajouri town during last 15 days. The presence of drug traffickers/ peddlers and the drug addicts in Rajouri city and in its vicinity has taken an alarming proportion which forced members of civil society especially young social and political activists to come openly against the drug menace.
On Sunday some youth including Tazim Dar, Asif Bhat, Nadeem and many others launched a anti-drug campaign and warned those involved in drug trafficking and taking drugs to stop their activities otherwise they will not hesitate to take action against them with the active support of senior police officers.
"We have been experiencing an alarming increase of drug abuse among the youngsters in recent years and the teens are being held for consuming drugs and most of them are usually aged between 14-20 years," said a social activist.
Members of civil society and prominent youth leaders and citizens have expressed their anguish over the alleged nexus between lower ranked police officials and drug smugglers.
"It is due to this nexus that the drug smugglers have increased their activities and more and more youth are felling prey to them. Stringent action against such police personnel by the senior officers will definitely put break on the activities of drug smugglers," said a Legislature in a meeting of prominent citizens organized by district administration today.
On July 6, two youth namely Liakat Ali and Mohd Shafiq who were nominated drug abusers and peddlers died due to over dose of drugs at Bela colony in the vicinity of highly protected DC Colony.
Five-six drug peddlers were in the room including Chootu Shah (under treatment) and the deceased when they took the over dose. Two among them have been arrested by the police.
On July 16, another youth Anies Anjum, a student of B Tech at New Delhi, who had come to Rajouri for Eid celebrations was found dead on the bed in his room.
Police sources said that he had consumed over dose of drugs and police have rounded up 4-5 of his colleagues for questioning reportedly present with the deceased when he had consumed the drug.
"Rajouri police has already launched a campaign against the drug peddlers and drug abusers and have lodged 12 cases against them. After recent incident several measures including strict surveillance on the activities of these elements and on the possible routes of drug trafficking have been taken," said SSP Rajouri, Rajeshwar Singh.
Major routes from where the drugs are entering Rajouri district include Mughal road, Jammu-Poonch highway, Rajouri-Mendhar belt etc.
Recently Jammu police have arrested three youth from Rajouri district along with other smugglers with a consignment of heroine which was smuggled from Mughal Road from Kashmir Valley.
