Incessant rains bring untold misery for Kathua | | | Arun Trisal Early Times Report
Kathua, July 18: Incessant rains from last few days in Kathua have resulted in water logging on all major roads and lanes of the city creating difficulties for the people. Shaheedi Chowk- Mukherjee Chowk road, Bhagat Singh Chowk to Zarai morh, Session Court road have converted into ponds due to lack of proper arrangements by Municipal Council Kathua. ERA, took the tender for construction of road that got damaged right after its construction. The company that has to maintain the road for atleast three years after the construction squandered Crores of rupees and carried out poor quality construction due to which the roads were converted into ponds. Astoundingly, there was no check on the poor quality of construction by the agency from the district administration. Residents said they were forced to stay indoors as rain had resulted in flooding of all routes, restricting the pedestrian as well as vehicular movement. The locals were aghast at the authorities for failing to restore the defunct drainage system. "Due to water logging on roads, neither our children are able to go to school nor are we able to go to work. Despite repeated appeals, the authorities have failed to work on developing a proper drainage system," said a resident. Residents said even the major roads in Kathua had not been dewatered, which led to traffic congestion in most parts. "Dewatering has not been done since yesterday," said another resident. The problem has particularly aggravated in the low lying areas where residents said they could not even step out of their houses as drain water had gathered in their lawns. Most of the main drains in the city are lying defunct since they were constructed. No major drainage projects have been undertaken by the MC Kathua to mitigate the problem. |
