Education sector on 'ventilator', mantri maintains silence | | | Saqib Junaid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 5: If there's a sector that has suffered most in the ongoing turmoil in Kashmir it's education. Education Minister Naeem Akhtar Andrabi has been facing the heat within the cabinet for failing to convince the parents to send their children to schools. "Now he is not speaking a word about whether the schools will reopen or not and if students will be given mass promotions," a senior official of the Education department said. "Instead of making announcements twice in the past two months about reopening of schools, the minister should have made it sure that directions are also implemented on the ground. Now he is completely silent and watching how the education system is going to the dogs. The education of our children has been badly affected in the ongoing crisis. Akhtar had made a fool of himself by claiming several times that "all the schools and colleges will start functioning from tomorrow." He had made the announcement even as there was no let up in the killings and injuries of civilians during clashes by the forces. Firdous Ahmad, a teacher, said the government has not issued any special passes for the employees, hence it was not possible for them to attend the duties amid the ongoing crisis in the Valley. "Education minister should know the reality on the ground before issuing directions," he said. For schools, summer vacations were initially supposed to be over by July 17 but were extended by another week given the crisis in the Valley. Then another announcement was made in earlier August. Now government has maintained complete silence on it and seems least bothered to make it sure that educational institutions are opened or some alternatives are made so that education of children in Kashmir does not suffer. Earlier, the September 2014 floods dealt a heavy blow to Kashmir's education sector. Hundreds of educational buildings remain unsafe because of the floods. Now the ongoing turmoil has further hit the education system.
