Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 5: Contrary to its tall talk of transparency, J&K Services Selection Board has faltered in keeping this up in its recently publicized list of selected candidates for the posts of draftsmen in Mechanical and Electrical wings for Public Works department. The 'technical error' in the list made the authorities remove the list from its website within hours, thanks to the directions of the HC which the latter gave to Board on the basis of petition of some candidates who were not called for the interviews at all.
Sources said the Recruitment Board which is a reputed recruiting body in the state and which should have maintained highest standards in making fair selections as also in ensuring transparency in the selections disappointed many deserving candidates as there was a major lacuna in the selection list of draftsmen. In its advertisement for the posts, Board had clearly mentioned that posts are to be filled separately for both Mechanical and Electrical Department and the interviews were held accordingly , sources said. However, when the final list was made public it came as a shock to many as same candidates who had been shown as selected in the Electrical category, his name also figured in the list of Mechanical division sources added.
Even as the list created furore among the aspirants, there was no word from the higher authorities as to the cause of the confusion in the selection process and the final list. It was the Court direction few days back which impelled the authorities to take corrective steps, sources said adding that within no time it removed the list from its website, a copy of which is with ET. Upon petition of some candidates who were not called for the interviews for reasons unknown, the Court directed the to conduct interviews for them. Fearing a backlash from the candidates whose name did not figure in the list , the Board authorities in order to cover up their error and the accountability for this lapse of not having selected candidates in separate categories, made a hasty retreat from the entire process, which involved time, money and more importantly, the career prospects of the candidates, sources said. The interviews will now be held afresh on September 8, sources said but this has for apparent reasons disappointed those who were shown in the list as selected candidates.
Sources also said that Selection Board more often than not creates confusion in its process when it selects the candidates whose degrees are withheld for one or the other reason, and for whom they later contend that they have not degrees from bonafide institutions. In the remarks it mentions that recommendations withheld until candidates produce bonafide certificates or documents that show required draftsmanship certificate. It has also been seen in the past for certain posts political pressure also works at the time of interviews, sources further said
