SPO's house torched, weapon snatched from cop | Violence continues in Kulgam | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report
Kulgam, Sept 5: There seems no end to violence in this southern district, as incidents of damage to private and public property continue unabated. On Monday evening, an angry mob attacked and set on fire the house of local police cop (SPO) for being part of the party that had fired tear smoke shells on a rally organized in his native village Zanglipora. However, due to timely arrival of fire tenders, the house was partially damaged in the fire. Reports said that on Monday morning, thousands of people assembled in the village to attend the rally called by Itehad-e-Milat organization. But police and paramilitary forces attempted to foil the rally, resulting in clashes between youth and forces. During clashes, dozens of people sustained injuries. Later in the evening, youth again clashed with security forces. "Forces smashed window panes of the houses and vehicles," villagers alleged. Sources said that after the evening clashes, a mob attacked the residence of cop identified as Javed Ahmad Shan. Villagers alleged that Javed was part of the police party which had fired tear smoke shells on the rally. Meanwhile, on Monday evening unknown persons snatched weapon of a cop who posted in the home of a CPI (M) leader in Bugam village of Kulgam. Masked youth, according to sources, barged into the residence of Communist leader Ali Mohammad Koka at around 9 pm and snatched the service rifle of the cop guarding him. The incident has exposed the security grid which in last 58 days hasn't formulated a policy to deal with such situations. "It is certain that militants will try to snatch weapons of those cops guarding the residence of politicians in rural areas," sources added. |
