Garbage piles up in Budgam, thanks to unrest | | | Early Times Report Budgam, Sept 21: As the unrest continues in Kashmir valley, the disposal of solid waste has become a matter of concern not only for the people but for local administration in Budgam district. From last 75 days local municipal authorities in Budgam, Chadoora and Magam towns have only been able to lift 10 percent of the garbage from residential areas. Also, the existing garbage dumping sites in Budgam are fully chocked. There is an urgent demand for new dumping sites. Due to absence of a scientific solid waste management system in Budgam, Magamand Chadoora towns in particular locals have urged upon the authorities to come to their rescue. Details available with Early Times reveal that existing garbage dumping site near Budgam town has very less space to accommodate more and more solid waste collected from the 13 municipal wards of the town. According to reports, district administration has already identified a place in the town outskirts to be used as garbage dumping site, but the locals living around that area (Patwaaw) are resisting it. The residents say that instead of creating a garbage dump, the government should construct a school in the area. Pertinent to mention that garbage dumping is a serious problem in Budgam district. At a time when the whole country is organizing sanitation programmes under clean India programme "Swach Bharat Mission" , the authorities at the helm of affairs in J&K are leaving no stone unturned to bring disrepute to the state by getting involved into anti-people and anti environment activities. According to reliable sources the officials of local municipality in Chadoora town have been dumping of all the garbage into the Doodh-Ganga nallah which flows through this town. Irony is that same water is supplied by Public Health Engineering (PHE) department to thousands of people in Budgam as well as Srinagar districts. "The successive governments have failed to establish a scientific dumping site for Chadoora town. There is lot of land available in the outskirts of Chadoora town, but till date not even one kanal land has been identified for the same. The municipality employees throwall the trash in local water body and on certain occasions it is transported to Budgam dumping site which is already overflowing with garbage. From last two months the garbage accumulated in residential areas is not at all lifted as employees hardly turn to their duties inspite of the fact that most of them hail from Chadoora town only," said Mukhtar Ahmad of Chadoora town. |
