Edu Minister, BOSE differ on exam dates; students in a fix | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 21: The contradictory statements and announcements from Education Minister and the Board of School Education (BOSE) authorities have put the students in Kashmir in a fix. On September 17, the Education Minister Naeem Akhtar announced that the annual examinations would be held on time, as "Time waits for none." He also ruled out any possibility of discussing the issue of delaying the examination schedule this year due to the prevailing unrest in Valley. Declaring that there will be no change in the academic calendar this year, Akhtar in a statement had said that the examinations would be held as per schedule and there will be no change in session. However, what surprised many was the announcement by the BOSEon Wednesday in which it announced that the exams of Class 10th and 12th have been delayed. Such an announcement has taken the lid out of the education system in the state wherein chaos and disorder is dominating the scenes. "Education minister is a government in itself. If he says something on record- that statement becomes official. He had said that the exams will be held on time and I had to go to New Delhi to get my daughter back to Kashmir- she was there with her uncle studying," says Abdul Rashid, a parent whose kin is this year appearing in class 10th examination. According to him, there were scores of other parents who were much stressed after education minister's 'exam on time' statement. They had their kids outside the state and they booked last minute tickets to get their children back. They were expecting exams to be held in October's first week as per the schedule. Hwoever, according to a notification issued by BOSE on Thursday, the examination for both 10th and 12th classes in Kashmir division would be conducted in second week of November 2016. Pertinently, as per the previous schedule the examination for class 10th was to be conducted in the first week of October 2016 while for class 12th the examination was to be conducted in the third week of October 2016. This time again, education minister Naeem Akhtar came up with a thorough explanation. "We shall have to complete the process of conduct of examinations and declaration of results well in time so that the students can prepare for and appear in various competitive examinations including NEET and JEE for admission to various professional courses, both within and outside the State," Akhtar said. |
