Youth turn defiant towards Geelani, enroll enmasse for SPO recruitment | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Sept 21: The 86-year-old Hurriyat hawk along with his comrades was on Wednesday muzzled after youth in thousands defied him and took part enmasse in a recruitment drive held by police in restive south Kashmir. Such a move by the Kashmiri youth has dazzled one and all. Both police and civil authorities hadn't expected such a large participation of youth into these drives in view of the current unrest. "Seems like winds have changed their coarse. Youth were seen running, standing up for the height measurement with zeal and zest. In Kashmir, anything can happen any time and such an observation has today been vindicated by none other than the youth here," eye witnesses said after witnessing the recruitment drives. Meanwhile, apprehending jibes, the separatists have preferred to keep mum over the issue and haven't reacted to such developments. As described by a social activist, the separatists have miserably failed to feel the youth pulse of today's Kashmir. "Time has gone when youth would have been hoodwinked by the catchy slogans. They now contemplate everything- be it politics or issues related to society," he said. Days after the union home minister Rajnath Singh announced a mega employment package for the Jammu and Kashmir youth. A recruitment drive for the posts of Special Police Officers (SPOs) was held in otherwise militancy hotbed- south Kashmir. Eye witnesses while recollecting the scenes narrated that it dazzled one and all when youth in hordes started treading towards the site where drive was about to begin. There were no less than 7 to 10 thousand youth waiting in queues to get their names enrolled for the selection process. Interestingly, such a development has taken place at a time when Kashmir is reeling under the unrest period with strikes entering into the 75th day. South Kashmir was considered so far as the epicentre of the 2016 unrest with major protests and clashes being reported from the region. Reports informed that the highest number of youths who've applied for the SPO post are in four districts of South Kashmir: Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian, considered the hotbed of the ongoing unrest. Around 5,000 youths have applied in South Kashmir, with the highest applications seen in Anantnag. No less than 1,363 youths filed applications for the post of SPO in Srinagar district, reports added. Sources said that after the posts were advertised, more and more youth are coming forward with their applications. "There are youth who have sound educational background. All they want is to earn their livelihood with dignity," sources privy to the development said. Pertinently, the octogenarian separatist Syed Ali Geelani had called for the overall boycott of the SPO recruitment drive- asking youth not to fall prey to such state tactics. He had reiterated his call repeatedly through his party handouts. However, what has made this aged separatist to eat humble pie is the massive participation of youth into these drives especially that of the SPO. Geelani had said in August, this year that the government's decision to recruit SPOs was aimed at reviving the notorious 'Ikhwan culture' in the state and warned youths against taking up the job. |
