Jammu, Ladakh suffering for no fault | Kashmir unrest | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 21: The story of Jammu and Ladakh is one of utter neglect and ever since 11947, when Nehru ditched Jammu to please Sheikh Abdullah and transferred political power from Jammu to Srinagar in a hush, hush manner. People of Jammu and Ladakh never got justice from the Kashmiri rulers, whosoever they were. They all treated Jammu and Ladakh with contempt with the Indian political class or national parties like the Congress and the BJP always at the back and call of pampered Kashmiri rulers. They were denied proper share in the assembly, in the government, in the secretariat, in the revenue magistracy and judicial services and financial institutions. In fact, New Delhi empowered the Kashmiri rulers to convert Jammu and Ladakh into their colonies where the life of the people will not be one of political and economic aspirations but of toil and penury. It's no wonder that disaffection, discontent and disappointment has gripped both the regions with many in the regions demanding secession from Kashmir or demanding UT status for Ladakh and status of statehood for Jammu province lying between River Ravi and Pir Panjal, the natural border between Jammu and Kashmir. There are reports that many have become active in both the regions and many activities are going on beneath the surface or behind the curtain. And there are cogent reasons to believe that both the regions would be in turmoil sooner than later. There is general consensus in Jammu and Ladakh that the people there will have to fend for themselves and that to pin faith in New Delhi could be counter-productive and disastrous. They have lost faith in Delhi and the Indian political class. What has aggravated the situation in Jammu and Ladakh all the more is the total neglect of these regions by the state government after the killing of Burhan Wani on July 8. The developmental works in both the regions have come to a standstill. Ladakh is not getting funds which are due to. Healthcare facilities are non-existent even in such institutions as Jammu Medical College and hospital. Roads are in a very bad shape. People are not getting electricity and potable water. The fact of the matter is that things in the two regions have worsened. The suffering people are saying they are suffering for not fault of theirs; they are suffering because of the small Valley, which controls everything. They are all the more angry with their representatives and ministers and say they have left them to the care of God and anarchy. The government must look into the immediate need of the people of these two regions and release funds so that roads were repaired, people got the required healthcare facilities and also get electricity and potable water. This is the minimum that the aggrieved people of Jammu and Ladakh need. |
