Early Times Report
Udhampur, Oct 2: Encroachment of pavements is one of the most common violations in Udhampur, with many shops and main gole market in the city brazenly flouting Supreme Court ruling.
The inspection has been made on regular basis by the district administration including Deputy Commissioner ,ADC, Tehsildars, CEO Municipality who claimed strict actions several times but all seemed in vain as the shopkeepers have their own books and rules.
Feria Gift center a renowned shop flouting all the rules norms in air have blocked the footpath by keeping the counters and chairs in between and the sign boards are almost above the road , said a local Bharat Choudhary .
Many shops are seen displaying items on the pavements even though a Supreme Court order makes it clear that pavements are for pedestrians only. This also gives an ugly look to markets and create problem for general public.
The residents alleged that majority of shopkeepers are indulging in illegal encroachment of space in front of their shops including foot path and road to display their products in order to enhance their business.
Apart from that other hawkers too spread their shops on the roadsides and on the footpaths leaving virtually no space to walk on.
Since encroachment is a big issue in Udhampur but nobody is bothered to tackle it. One can see illegal encroachment on roads with illegal parking of private vehicles.
Vehicles are being parked on the main roads. "We are facing various problems walking in the area because footpaths and road are captured by the shopkeepers, but when it comes to street vendors the administration seems to be strict on poor people said, Radhey Sham a senior resident of Udhampur
There is no parking facility available in these areas and the shopkeepers and their customers have to park their vehicles on the busy road, which compound problem for common masses and they are forced to walk on the roads.
When we spoke to CEO Municipality Santosh Kotwal, he said we will surely take strict actions against the people who are found flouting the rules and we have also prepared a list of shopkeepers who have encroached the footpath. We ensure the action very soon, he said.
