Terrorists strike near summer capital, shoot dead former Sarpanch in Pampore | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 2: Militants struck in the Pampore area in South Kashmir's Pulwama district and shot dead a former Sarpanch in the afternoon today. Security forces have launched a manhunt to track down the assailants who carried out the attack. Reports said that at least two militants appeared in the Kandizal area near Pampore and shot at the former Sarpanch. The former Sarpanch identified as Fayaz Ahmad Bhat received some bullets and was immediately shifted to the Pampore hospital. The doctors at the hospital declared him brought dead. Reports said that Fayaz sustained grievous injuries and succumbed to his injuries at the spot itself. The Kandizal area falls within 13 kilometers from the city centre of Srinagar and is a part of the Pulwama district. There are inputs that there is a huge presence of militants in Pulwama district and the attack on former Sarpanch might have been carried out by the same militants. The attackers came on a motor cycle and fired at least two shots from the pistol which they were carrying. Fayaz was earlier associated with National Conference and won the election from the party ticket during the 2011 Panchayat elections. Since the tenure of Panchayats in the state ended some months back this year, Fayaz seized to be a Sarpanch. Reports said that the death of former Sarpanch led to shock among the people with women beating their chests while mourning his death. Although, police and security forces launched a manhunt to track down the attackers no arrests were made by the time of filing of this report. A statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters, Kashmir said that militants shot at 30 year old Fayaz Ahmad Bhat son of Abdul Ghani Bhat a resident of Kandizal, in district Pulwama at his home. "He was shifted to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead," it said adding police and security forces immediately cordoned off the area. The deceased, according to the statement, is survived by four sisters and aged parents. The statement said that situation remained by and large remained peaceful in the Kashmir valley today. It said that some stray stone pelting incidents were reported. The statement said that police in its drive against the miscreants arrested 60 such individuals involved in various offences of creating disturbances in different part of the valley. The statement said that during the day greater movement of people and vehicular traffic was observed in Srinagar, besides Sunday market also opened in the city which was thronged by shoppers. It said that vehicles were also seen plying in the main towns as also on the inter-district roads. |
