After 3-month shutdown, Azadi nowhere in sight | As Police tighten noose around miscreants; Shops start reopening, traffic begins to move | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 2: Fed up with continuous shutdown and strikes people in Kashmir are asking each other why did they observe a shutdown for three months and what have separatists achieved by turning youth into cannon fodder. A Kashmir watcher while talking to Early Times said, "Fifty percent of the business community has started defying the protest calendar issued by the Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani, while the remaining is waiting for police and other security agencies to give a go ahead to them." He said, "At present shops in Kashmir are closed due to the fear of stone pelters and miscreants, who have been threatening people and asking them not to resume the daily chores till Azadi arrives." A businessman, who wished not to be named, said, "All Kashmiris have realized that they have been hoodwinked on the name of Azadi. We have suffered tremendous losses during the past three months. Separatists issuing protest calendar when tourist season was at its peak has ruined the entire season. Businessmen during the past few days have held many meetings with the top police officials and have asked them to provide traders with adequate security so that they can open their shops and resume their business." Another businessman said, "We used to earn during summer months so that we can survive in winter. Even if the strike ends now it won't serve any purpose. Winter is approaching fast and its off season for us. Every small or big businessman owes money to banks and for the past three months he has been paying the interest without earning a single penny. Besides banks we owe money to our suppliers in Jammu and Delhi. They have made it clear to us that they won't send anymore goods till we clear our pending payments and all the transactions in future would be done in cash." A principal of the private school said, "Students are the verge of losing academic year as their syllabus is incomplete and exams have been announced. During the past few days we have seen students staging protest demanding their exams should be postponed as they know it very well that if exams are held as per schedule they would find it hard to get through. Continuous strikes and protests have demolished the entire system. God only can help us now." An analyst said, "Private sector which had started thriving in Kashmir has vanished from the scene as many companies have winded up their businesses and have sacked the Kashmiri employees. Separatists wanted to turn Kashmir into Syria and they have succeeded in doing so. Shame on them!" He said, "As the hartal fever is coming down people are asking each other what they achieved by following the separatists, who put entire Kashmir on the suicidal path. More than 90 youth died and 3000 sustained injuries, and Kashmiris faced whopping loses by closing down their businesses." |
