Srinagar, Dec 11: The national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley, was closed due to snowfall last night. Meanwhile, despite rain the Srinagar-Jammu national highwah, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for traffic. A traffic police official told that the highway was closed today following six to eight inches of snowfall between Sonamarg-Zojilla and Meenmarg last night. He said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway, has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men on work to clear the snow. However, traffic from Kargil to Leh on the highway was plying. Meanwhile, large number of vehicles are stranded on both sides of the Zojila pass. Traffic on the highway will be resumed only after receiving a green signal from the BRO and officials posted at different places. In the past the highway was being closed in the month of November for six winter months. However, for the past few years the highway remained open till there was heavy snowfall. |
