Ridiculous: Water@ Rs 30,000 per month | | | Early Times Report
Rajouri, Dec 11: Believe it or not but it is true that more than 35 families of a border village have been paying Rs 30,000 per month to a Tata Mobile owner for supplying them drinking water as the department has failed to provide water. Not only PHE department failed to supply water but even the money has not been given to the contractor who has constructed the Pump room and storage tank ( new PHE scheme approved for this village) few months ago despite the money was released to the department under Border Areas Development Funds (BADF) in respect of Public Health Engineering (PHE) sector. The border village in question is Kaila( in Panjgrain panchyat) under the jurisdiction of Manjakot tehsil. Under District Development Commissioner (DDC) Rajouri order No. 236 dt 9/10/2015,a lift system water supply scheme was approved to provide water to the people of Kaila and adjoining areas for Rs 6 lacs. Under this order allocation of Rs 4.87 lacs was also approved and the money was released at the disposal of Superintending Engineer (SE) Hydraulic Circle. "In the month of December last year the PHE officials allotted the construction work of the pump room and storage tank to a local contractor who had completed the work about 6 months ago. But till today neither any payment was made to the contractor nor the department took any initiative to install the water lifting motor or to make the scheme functional" said Haji Zakir, Naib Sarpanch of village Panjgrain. He added during last few months various deputations met the Executive Engineer, PHE, Nissar Khan and concerned Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) but instead hollow promises nothing physically executed on the ground. Hazi Zakir added, for the last three years about 35 families have been paying Rs1000 per day to a local Tata Sumo owner to provide them safe drinking water. "We have also requested the Executive Engineer to provide us drinking water through tanks at least twice a week till the scheme was made functional. We are ready to pay for diesel/petrol but no action was taken in this regard till today" said Abdul Hussain, sarpanch of the area. The State government as well as the Public Health Engineering Department have been claiming to provide safe drinking water to the people of border or remote areas in Rajouri district. But on ground people almost in every area of the district including urban as well as in rural have been complaining of acute shortage of water and every day people have been holding protest demonstrations at their respective places and before the offices of Deputy commissioner and Executive Engineer (PHE). |
